Go the Extra Mile

Daily Easter Essential: Jesus taught us that love will go well beyond what is expected of us. In Rome, Jews were required to carry the armour of a Roman soldier one mile. This was a heavy load to bear and humiliating. Jesus said, in light of this, “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles” (Matthew 5:41). Erwin McManus says in view of this Scripture, “Choose service over obligation, servanthood over slavery. If they force you to work, then confound them with greater wisdom. Never forget you are always free to do more.” Consider today the expectations others have of you (your mom/dad, spouse, manager, children, teacher) and go beyond what is required of you. Don’t do it because you have to, but because you are following the Holy Spirit and exercising your freedom in the LORD. Shalom.
